Why I Quit My Online Guitar Classes (And Why I Came Back to an Indian Teacher) - Confession

In today’s modern world, where technology is evolving at a very fast pace, many students like me have started learning guitar online. I tried a popular Western music academy in Canada. The teacher was nice, but he kept asking, “So… what’s a raga?”

I said, “It’s like a scale, but with soul.” He looked confused.

He taught me “Smoke on the Water” for three weeks. Meanwhile, my cousin in Delhi was already playing “Pasoori” on Instagram and getting 10K likes.

I quit.

Then I found an online guitar teacher from India who actually knew what “Tum Hi Ho” was. Not just the song — he knew the mood. He said, “This one is for broken hearts and late-night drives.”

First class, he played it in Em7. I cried a little.

Now I learn Bollywood fusion guitar every Sunday at 8 PM IST (that’s 10:30 AM in Toronto). My mom says I’ve become “less grumpy.” My dog barks less during practice.

If you’re an NRI or expat and your guitar teacher doesn’t know Arijit Singh, are you even learning guitar, or just wasting money?
